INDEPENDENCE -- The Central High School Panther Club has donated $7,200 for scholarships to cover participation fees for low-income athletes at Central High.
The club traditionally uses part of the proceeds from its fall auction to pay for equipment or other large expenditures. Members recently decided to double the amount of money allocated for scholarships for Central athletes, said Leanne Huhn, a club member.
Between 70 and 140 students will benefit during the upcoming spring sports season, Huhn said.
"We've never had a response for an item like this," she said. "We want to thank the whole community for how they step up when they know donations are helping kids."
