October 09, 2013
WEST SALEM - Sydney Van Steenberge and Cheyenne Locke combined for three goals and an assist in Western Mennonite/Perrydale's 7-0 win over Amity Monday afternoon.
The victory along with wins over Central (6-1) in the endowment game Oct. 1 and Blanchet Catholic (5-1) Thursday has the Pioneers record at 9-1 overall and 8-1 in Special District 3 play.
The solid record this season may portend things to come, but the Pioneers have yet to face many real challengers as Santiam Christian, Dayton and Creswell (the team's one loss) are the only teams they have faced with winning records.
It will be a make-or-break end of the season for the Pioneers as three of its five final games are against those squads starting with Dayton on Wednesday (today).
"We have a lot of momentum and confidence right now,"Western Mennonite/Perrydale coach Mike Woodard said. "Sydney is playing well, Cheyenne has been great up front with her. Kelsey Ford and Emily Nelson have been solid in the back row all season and we will need all those players in the stretch run."
CENTRAL BOYS SPLIT: Oct. 1 the Panthers traveled to Taft and won 3-1. Antonio Rincon and Alan Villeneuva had goals in the victory. DALLAS BOYS SHUTOUT: The Dragons hosted Crescent Valley on Thursday in its Oregon West opener. Dallas kept it close in the first half, but the Raiders scored five in the second half to defeat the Dragons 6-0. The loss gives Dallas an 0-7-1 overall.
