Led by a balanced scoring attack and strong defense, Central defeated Cottage Grove 41-33 on Friday.
"We didn’t play as well as I wanted to, but Cot-tage Grove is a tough team and ranked in the top 10," coach Julie McDonald said. "Match ups were a little difficult for us, but we did what we needed to come out with a win."
Catherine Cutsforth led the Panthers with 10 points with, Kylie Nash and Ryanne Huffman adding nine and seven points, respectively. But it was the team’s defense that helped pull the victory out.
"Defensively we fronted the posts well and kept it out of their hands and limited their offensive put backs," McDonald said. "Brianna Broadus really pressured their guards and got several steals from them."
The Panthers, led by Maddy Pape's 22 points, defeated Seaside 55-46 on Dec. 28 to win the Stayton Holiday Tournament championship.
