Hazel Ray Plummer Torgerson

March 17, 1915 - December 30, 2017

Hazel Ray Torgerson, 102, went to be with Jesus Dec. 30, 2017, in the presence of family and staff at Maryville Nursing home, Beaverton. Born to Louis W. Plummer and Emma S. Plummer on their prune farm north of Dallas. Predeceased by older sister Gladys and younger sister Ruth.
A 1933 graduate of North Dallas High School; she worked for a year and graduated from Oregon State College 1938 in Secretarial Science. Honors included The Chi Omega Prize, Phi Chi Theta Honorary, Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board National Senior Honorary. The co-op she started was re-named the Hazel Rae House.
She worked at the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Administration and Extension Service offices on OSC Campus. She married Edward Fritchoff Torgerson Jr. Sept. 7, 1940. Three children were born in Corvallis: Kay, Erik, and Alice. They moved to SW Portland in 1946, where James (JV) and Ruth were born. She divorced Ed in 1958, and raised her five children in the Southwest Portland home.
A 1953 charter member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, known affectionately as the amiable nag, she served and actively prompted others to serve until 1992, when macular degeneration and failing sight forced her to stop.
She worked for Joslyn Mfg & Supply in North Portland for 28 years, retiring in 1977. She volunteered at FISH Emergency Services for 22 years. Hazel had traveled to Israel, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. She loved to visit and was active in seniors programs at the SW Portland Neighborhood House.
In 1983, she moved into a three-bedroom apartment in Raleigh Hills, where she lived until age 97; then four years in Raleigh Hills Assisted living and one year at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton.
Survived by her children Kay Hill, Spokane, Wash.; Erik Torgerson, Portland; Alice Lindsay, Jacksonville, Fla.; James V Torgerson, Hillsboro; and Ruth Bronson, Joseph; and, 13 grandchildren, and over 28 great- and great-great-grandchildren.
