Roxann Humphries waters freshly hung petunia baskets Friday during a cleanup and fair preparation day at the Polk County Fairgrounds and Event Center in Rickreall. Volunteers worked to spruce up the facilities and start setting up livestock barns and other exhibit areas for the 95th Polk County Fair, scheduled Aug. 7-10. This week is back-to-school time in Polk County, and Tuesday marked the first official day of classes for many students. Above, students at LaCreole Middle School prepare for class on their first day of school on Tuesday. Sixth- through eighth-graders crowded the hallways finding their lockers and saying “hello” to each other after a long summer vacation.

This week is back-to-school time in Polk County, and Tuesday marked the first official day of classes for many students. Left, Jamylin Martinez (right) readies her backpack for first grade, organizing her paperwork, files and binder, at Ash Creek Elementary School in Monmouth. Joseleen Martinez waits to be taken to her third-grade classroom. The students are excited to be starting the school year, particularly Jamylin, who had to have a binder just like her older sister’s, even though binders are not required for first-graders in the Central School District.
