The Luckiamute Charter School students, parents, teachers, and friends were thrilled with a presentation from Portland Opera To Go on Oct. 15. Actors taught a classroom segment to grades four through eight, then treated the kids to a live performance of excerpts from La Boheme. The Pedee School thanks the church for their hospitality in hosting the live performance portion of the day.

Then on Oct. 17, students ran a jog-a-thon. They brought in $1,131.94 that will be used to fund field trips and classroom activities. This is the first of several fundraisers the students will participate in throughout the year. Medals were awarded to the top point-earners: a gold to Lucas Lefever, Amelie Panimdim and Karalee Bietel; a silver to Joey Sloan, Olivia Sherman and Shaun Hibbard; and bronze medals to Trey Rardin, Kaiden Collman and Nathan Hibbard.

The Women’s Club announced this year’s winner of their patriotic raffle quilt at their Holiday Fair on Nov. 9, who was Jeff Patterson from Monmouth. He bought his ticket at the Polk County Fair. He is a veteran and was very surprised and happy that he won. The quilt ticket sales and this annual fundraiser supports their service to deployed military overseas, quilts for veterans, and CASA. The club almost sold out of their homemade soup, pie, candy and baked goods at the annual bazaar, as it seemed like there were more people than ever this year. Several biking clubs stopped by for lunch.

My daughter Suzanne Burbank and I attended American Agri-Women’s national convention, which was hosted this year by Oregon Women for Agriculture in Portland (finally, no jet lag!) on a sunny weekend two weeks ago. The speakers were especially good this year, as well as the round table discussions, as we learned about ag issues. A highlight was excellent entertainment by the Bethel Mountain Band, bluegrass and gospel. The band includes singer Will Barnhart, who lives in Polk County. Next year’s convention will be in Montana.

While Suzanne and I were in Portland, her son Brennan was going to enjoy a weekend of elk hunting, but he got his elk six minutes into the hunt, so his season was over just like that.
