MONMOUTH/INDEPENDENCE — In a sort of sibling rivalry for the best of reasons, Monmouth and Independence police departments are in a heated — albeit friendly — competition to see who can gather the most donations to the Ella Curran Food Bank.

The idea started from Kate Schwarzler, owner of IndyCommons, as part of hosting the Monmouth-Independence Chamber of Commerce’s November Thirsty Thursday.

“It seems like such a good way to give back,” Schwarzler said. “I had long ago volunteered to host the November Thirsty Thursday. As part of that, we’re coming up on the holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s good to give back to the community. The food bank came to mind as something that would benefit.”

The police departments are not the only teams competing for the coveted Golden Can Trophy, Schwarzler said, but they are likely the teams to beat.

“It’s a fun way for the businesses and community to get involved,” she said.

It’s not too late to donate.

“We will be taking canned donations up until the bitter end,” Schwarzler said. “I’m hoping to collect more food.”

Cash donations are accepted, too. She said $1 will equal 1 pound of food for the competition.

Schwarzler said she hopes to start weighing the donations Thursday afternoon so she can announce the winners at the Thirsty Thursday event, which starts at 5:30 p.m.

“I’m hoping this will become a yearly thing, and next year it will be even bigger with more businesses involved,” Schwarzler said.
