Itemizer-Observer report

DALLAS — A suspected explosive discovered at the Dallas Department of Motor Vehicles Office on Monday afternoon was found to be harmless after an evacuation and investigation by the Salem Police Bomb Squad.

At about 2:30 PM, Dallas Police responded to a report of a suspicious bag at the DMV office in the 514 East Ellendale Ave. Per protocol, the DMV had already evacuated employees and customers, read notification from Dallas Police.

“Officers investigated further and due to some additional concerning circumstances, law enforcement believed the bag needed to be treated as if it were an explosive or other hazardous device,” the notification read.

Officers evacuated neighboring homes and businesses, as well as shut down traffic in the area.

The Salem Police Bomb Squad was called and responded to address the situation.

“Ultimately, the bag was found to be safe and there was no intent by anyone inside to create an alarm,” the notification said.

The Dallas Police Department was assisted by the Salem Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon State Police, ODOT, Dallas Fire/EMS, and the Willamette Valley Communication Center, who assisted in coordinating all these resources.

“Thank you for your patience while we made sure the area was safe again,” the notification said.
