WESTERN OREGON ROUNDUP: Wolves hold on for Homecoming victory

MONMOUTH — Freshman running back Malik Braxton ran for 131 yards to help lead Western Oregon to a 31-25 Homecoming win over Central Washington on Saturday.

The Wolves (4-3 overall, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) had a 31-18 lead entering the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Phillip Fenumiai to Andy Avgi and a 32-yard field goal from Jesse Correa.

Trailing by six with less than 90 seconds left, CWU faced a 4th and 1 from Western Oregon’s 20-yard line. The Wolves’ defense held the Wildcats to no gain to preserve the victory.

Western Oregon plays at Simon Fraser on Saturday before returning home for the final three games of the season.

SOCCER SPLITS MATCHES: Western Oregon’s soccer team split a pair of conference matches. The Wolves defeated Saint Martin’s 2-0 on Thursday before falling to Concordia 2-0 on Saturday. Vicky Cruz Rosales and Machaela Rapozo scored for WOU against the Saints. Goalkeeper Nicole Tejada recorded 10 saves during the match, including blocking a penalty kick in the first half. Western Oregon (6-6-1 overall, 2-5-1 GNAC) hosts Northwest Nazarene at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and Montana State, Billings at noon on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS MSUB: Redshirt freshman Amanda Short recorded 14 kills to lead Western Oregon’s volleyball team to a 25-15, 26-24, 26-24 victory over Montana State, Billings on Thursday. The Wolves (5-14 overall, 2-8 GNAC) earned its first true road win of the season. WOU opened the week with a 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20 loss to Concordia on Oct. 13. The Wolves return home to host Central Washington on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
